عليلُsick صباباتٍpassionate longings أصبنَthey struck فؤاديmy heart
وَصيرنَand they made أجفانيmy eyelids بغيرِwithout رقادِsleep
I am ailing with longings that have stricken my heart,
I am sick with passionate longings that have struck my heart
and left my eyelids bereft of sleep.
And left my eyelids without sleep.
أقامَsettled لهfor it بينَbetween الضلوعِthe ribs توهجa blaze
لهit has أثرٌa trace باقٍlasting بجسميin my body وأنكادِand sorrows
A blaze for it has settled between my ribs;
A blaze has taken hold for it between my ribs,
its mark endures in my body, along with torments.
Leaving a lasting mark in my body, and sorrows.
أياO مقلةًan eye تبكيit weeps عليهاover them بدمعِهاwith its tears
بهاin it ندبٌa scar منfrom عبرةٍweeping وسُهادِand sleeplessness
O eye that weeps over those longings with your tears,
O eye that weeps over them with its tears,
within you is a scar born of weeping and sleeplessness.
It bears a scar from tears and sleeplessness.
كأنكِas though you عاديتِyou made an enemy of الفؤادَthe heart وإنماwhen in fact
أصابكِhas struck you هذاthis مذsince أصبتِyou struck فؤاديmy heart
You seem to have made an enemy of the heart—when in truth
As though you had made an enemy of the heart, when in fact
this befell you only since you wounded my heart.
This has struck you since you struck my heart.
