ولمand did not أشكُI complain طولَthe length of الليلِthe night حتَّىuntil رأيتنيI saw myself
أقلِّبُI turn طرفاًan eye يَرقُبُwatches النجمَthe star باكياweeping
I did not complain of the night's length until I saw myself
Turning an eye that watched the star, weeping;
وإنسانُand the pupil of عينيmy eye أنحلَmade emaciated الدَّمعُtears جسمَهُits body
خَميصَgaunt الحشاthe belly منfrom لذّةِthe pleasure of النَّومِsleep طاوِياfasting
And the pupil of my eye—tears had wasted its body—
Hollow-bellied, fasting from the pleasure of sleep;
وَقلباًand a heart أبىrefused إلاanything but التذكُّرَremembrance فارتوَىso drank its fill
بسلوانهِwith its solace شَوقٌlonging وأصبحَand became صادِياthirsty
And a heart that refused all but remembrance; longing drank its fill
Of its solace, while the heart grew thirsty.
أناخَencamped إليهِbeside it الهَمُّsorrow فاعتاضَso it took in exchange زَفرةًa sigh
منof الشَّوقِlonging لاnever تبلىwears away وإنand even though كانit was باكياweeping
Sorrow encamped beside it, and it took in exchange a sigh
Of longing that never wears away, though it was weeping.
