بينَbetween الجَوانحِthe ribs والحشاand the entrails ألمُpain
تَركَleft الجفونَthe eyelids دموعهنَّtheir tears دَمُblood
Between the ribs and the entrails is pain.
Between my ribs and heart, there is pain
It has left the eyelids with blood for their tears.
That left the eyelids with tearful strains
كيفَhow العزاءُconsolation لقلبِfor a heart مكتئبٍsorrowful
ألفَgrew accustomed to الغليلَburning thirst وكلهُand all of it سَقَمُsickness
What solace is there for a sorrowful heart
How to console a grieving heart
that has grown used to burning thirst and is all sickness?
That's accustomed to torment and hurt
لبِسَdonned النحولَwasting فماso there is no بمُهجتهِin its soul
طرفٌa blink وليسَand not تقلُّهُbears it قَدمُa foot
It has donned wasting; in its soul there is no
Weariness has worn it out, till in its joy
flicker, nor does a foot bear it.
There's no cheer, and feet no more exert
يَخفَىis hidden الهَوىlove ياO منthe one whom كَلفتُI became enamored بهِof him
أوor ذلةُthe abasement المشتاقِof the longing lover تنكَتِمُis concealed
Can love be hidden, O you of whom I am enamored,
Love hidden, O you whom I'm burdened with
or the longing lover's abasement be concealed?
Or the lover's humiliation concealed
