شوقٌlonging تمكنtook hold منof هوىًlove فأذابهُand melted it
وضنىًand wasting illness رماهُshot it بسهمهِwith its arrow فأصابهand struck it
Longing took hold of love and melted it;
and wasting illness shot it with its arrow and struck it.
ليتwould that الفراقَseparation طوىَengulfed العذولَthe reproacher وإلفَهُand his beloved
وأطالَand prolonged بالحزنِwith grief الطويلِlong-lasting عذابهhis torment
Would that separation engulfed the reproacher and his beloved,
and prolonged his torment with long-lasting grief.
إنif أعتبَmakes amends to البينseparation المشتُsundering أخاthe devotee of الهوىlove
بعدafter العتابِreproach فقدthen indeed أطلتُI have prolonged عِتابهreproach of it
If sundering separation makes amends to love’s devotee
after reproach, then I have long reproached it.
أبكيI weep كماas يبكيweeps كئيبٌa sorrowful person مدنفٌgravely ill
منfrom شوقهِhis longing باللهby God ياO أحبابهhis beloved ones
I weep as a sorrowful, gravely ill man weeps
from his longing—by God, O his beloved ones!
