Answer—my body has called you, if you do not know.

Behold, my brothers have laid open the sanctuary of my nest.

Nor did I complain of what was in my heart, of what I felt within it,

of longing, until it nearly burst from my chest.

Whenever a sigh choked my heart with anguish,

with it I sent a tear flowing from my eye.

And can the sorrowful do anything but resign themselves?

And my longing suffices, since I have torn my veil for it.

I pass the night as though the night had said to its star:

Stay; do not answer the herald of morning, nor journey on.

And fresh grief and longing have grown threadbare,

and I believe afflictions come only from estrangement.
