أبوAbu (father of) المثنَّىal-Muthanna أبداًforever فيin غَرامِpassion
أبو المثنَّى أبداً في غَرامِ
قَدindeed باتَhe has become منfrom حبِّlove of طعامِfood of الكرامِthe generous
قَد باتَ من حبِّ طعامِ الكرامِ
Abu al-Muthanna is forever in love—
Abu al-Muthanna is forever lovesick;
smitten with the fare of generous hosts.
he has become so out of love for the generous folk's food.
يُعجبُهُit pleases him منfrom غيرهِsomeone other than him دَعوةٌan invitation
يُعجبُهُ من غيرهِ دَعوةٌ
حتَّىso much that يراهاhe sees it أبداًalways فيin المنامِdreams
حتَّى يراها أبداً في المنامِ
An invitation from someone else delights him,

so much that he sees it always in his dreams.

قدindeed رسمَhas inscribed التَّطفيلُgate-crashing feasts فيupon وجههِhis face
قد رسمَ التَّطفيلُ في وجههِ
هذاthis man حبيسٌa captive فيin سبيلِthe cause of الطعامِfood
هذا حبيسٌ في سبيلِ الطعامِ
Sponging has inscribed upon his face:
Gate-crashing feasts has inscribed upon his face:
“This man is bound to the cause of food.”
"This man is a captive in the cause of food."
ليسَhe is not بِقَوادٍa pimp ولكنَّهbut he
ليسَ بِقَوادٍ ولكنَّه
يُعجبُهُit pleases him المشيُّwalking أمامَahead of الغُلامِthe boy
يُعجبُهُ المشيُّ أمامَ الغُلامِ
He is no pimp; yet
He is no pimp, but
he delights in walking ahead of the boy.
he likes walking ahead of the boy.
