أنصف محبك واسمع من مقالته
ارفقbe gentle بهwith him وأعذهand protect him منfrom ملالتهweariness of him
ارفق به وأعذه من ملالته
Be fair to your lover, and listen to his words.
Be gentle with him, and spare him your weariness of him.
ماwhat يصنعdoes القلبthe heart بالدنياwith the world وزهرتهاand its bloom
ما يصنع القلب بالدنيا وزهرتها
ولمand has not been يقلpardoned ذنبهits fault عندupon استقالتهits plea for pardon
ولم يقل ذنبه عند استقالته
What can the heart do with the world and its bloom,
When its fault has not been pardoned as it begs forgiveness?
جفاهshunned him منthe one who هوhe يشفيهheals him ويسقمهand makes him ill
جفاه من هو يشفيه ويسقمه
ظلماunjustly فذلso he submitted لهto him عندin the face of استطالتهhis arrogance
ظلما فذل له عند استطالته
The one who heals him and makes him ill has shunned him,
Unjustly; so he submitted to him in the face of his arrogance.
ماnot يرحمhas mercy on المبتلىthe afflicted مماfor what ألمbefell بهhim
ما يرحم المبتلى مما ألم به
إلاexcept فتىa young man مبتلىafflicted فيin مثلlike حالتهhis plight
إلا فتى مبتلى في مثل حالته
No one has mercy on the afflicted for what has befallen him,
Except a young man afflicted in a plight like his.
