ومُكتئِبِand one sorrowful الفُؤادِof heart بكَتwept
ومُكتئِبِ الفُؤادِ بكَت
لرحمتهِout of pity for him عواذلُهhis reproachers
لرحمتهِ عواذلُه
And for one sorrowful of heart there wept
The broken-hearted wept
His reproachers, out of pity for him.
For his mercy, his fair maidens
أذابَmelted فؤادَهُhis heart كَمداًwith grief
أذابَ فؤادَهُ كَمداً
حبيبٌa beloved قلَّwas scant نائلهhis bounty
حبيبٌ قلَّ نائله
His heart was melted with grief
His heart melted like wax
By a beloved whose favors were few.
For a beloved rarely attained
فَلئِنso even if شَفاهhe cures him منof دنفٍwasting sickness
فَلئِن شَفاه من دنفٍ
فإنَّthen surely هواكَlove for you قاتلُهhis killer
فإنَّ هواكَ قاتلُه
So even if he cures him of wasting sickness,
If he was cured of sickness
Then surely love for you will kill him.
Still, your love would kill him
فتىًa youth قَوِيتgrew strong صَبابتهُhis ardent longing
فتىً قَوِيت صَبابتهُ
كماas ضعفتgrew weak وسائلُهhis means
كما ضعفت وسائلُه
A youth whose longing grew strong
A young man strengthened in his youth
As his means grew weak.
As in old age, his means weakened
