وعينٍand an eye قذاهاits mote الدمعُtears والنومُand sleep دمعُهاits tears
ترىit sees نومهاits sleep فيin أيٍّwhich عينٍeye بهاin it يجريflows
And an eye whose mote is tears, whose tears are sleep,
And eyes whose tears and sleep have tired,
sees in which eye its sleep flows.
Their sleep is seen in which eyes that weep?

It grew dim, without railing, from intense longing and weeping
How it wept with longing and crying's force,
over itself, the soul, the heart, and the breast.
Upon itself, the self, the heart and breast.

It wept a tear, then milked blood from its eyelid,
It wept with sadness, then its lids flowed blood,
which flowed in obedience to love’s anguish, sleep, and patience.
Obeying ardour, sleep, and patience's behest.
عدمتُكِmay I lose you عيناًO eye طالhas lasted long عتبيmy reproach بماfor what جَنَتit inflicted
علىupon نفسِهاitself ماas long as دُمتُI remain حياًalive علىthroughout الدهرِtime
May I lose you, O eye! Long has my reproach endured for what it wrought
I blame your eyes for all the wrong they wrought
upon itself, for all the time that I remain alive.
Upon themselves while I live through the ages.
