An eye charged with prolonged weeping,
Eyes tasked with weeping
and in weeping there is occupation for the eyes.
And in weeping eyes find occupation
أذعنَyielded للشوقِto longing دَمعُtears مقلتهاits pupil
أذعنَ للشوقِ دَمعُ مقلتها
كأنَّهاas though it were للهَوىto love مذللةmade submissive
كأنَّها للهَوى مذللة
The tears of its pupil have yielded to longing,
Her lashes acquiesce to yearning
as though it were made submissive to love,
As if to passion enslaved
وَجداًin yearning ببدرٍfor a full moon كأنَّas though وَجنتهُhis cheek
وَجداً ببدرٍ كأنَّ وَجنتهُ
بالغضِّwith the tender ones منof وردِهاits roses مكللةwreathed
بالغضِّ من وردِها مكللة
in yearning for a full moon whose cheek seems
Cheeks like a moon whose dimples
wreathed with its tender roses.
Are adorned with rose's blush enchained
كأنَّماas though الشمسُthe sun فيin سوالفهِthe sides of his neck
كأنَّما الشمسُ في سوالفهِ
تطلعُrises أوor فوقَهاabove them ممثلةportrayed
تطلعُ أو فوقَها ممثلة
As though the sun at the sides of his neck
As though the sun in its journeying
were rising, or portrayed above them.
