تحمَّلَdeparted مَنthe one who حَياتيmy life فيin يَديهِhis two hands
فواso, alas! أسَفيmy sorrow وياand oh! شَوقيmy longing إليهِfor him
He who holds my life in his hands has departed.
He who held my life in his hands
Alas, my sorrow! And oh, my longing for him!
Alas for my longing and yearning for him
تعالىexalted is اللَهGod ياoh! طوبىblessedness لعينٍfor an eye
تمتَّعَtook delight طرفُهاits gaze منin وجنتيهِhis two cheeks
Exalted is God! How blessed is the eye
God bless the eyes
Whose gaze has delighted in his cheeks.
That could feast on his cheeks
كأنَّas though البينَparting كانwas يُحبُّloving فجعيmy anguish
بهover him أوor كانَwas يحسدُنيenvying me عليهِfor him
As though parting loved my anguish
As if separation loved my anguish
Over him, or envied me for him.
Or envied me for having him
سأبكيI shall weep ماas long as أطاعَobeys الدمعُthe tears عينيmy eye
محاسنهُhis charms وفترةَand the languor مقلتيهِof his two eyes
I shall weep, as long as tears obey my eye,
I will weep as long as my eyes obey me
For his charms and the languor of his eyes.
For his beauty and his languorous glances
