أماas for الجفونthe eyelids فإنهاso indeed they are مطروفةsore
منfrom طولlength of time ماthat وكلتهاI consigned them للسهدto sleeplessness
As for my eyelids, they are sorely afflicted,
As for the eyelids, they are sore
From how long I have consigned them to sleeplessness.
from how long I have consigned them to sleeplessness.
والقلبand the heart منfrom زفراتهits sighs متوقدٌablaze

And the heart, from all its sighs, is ablaze,
And the heart is ablaze from its sighs,
With longing’s burning thirst in the breast—ablaze.
with the burning thirst of longing blazing within the breast.
ياO ربLord كمhow much أشكوI lament وماand not ليfor me راحةٌrest
ماذاwhat جنىcommitted طرفيmy gaze وماand what كسبتearned يديmy hand
O Lord, how I complain, yet have no rest!
O Lord, how much I lament, and I have no rest.
What has my eye transgressed, and what has my hand earned?
What wrong has my gaze committed, and what has my hand earned?
ياO موطنyou who lodge الزفراتthe sighs قلبthe heart محبهhis lover

بالهجرthrough estrangement هلis there منany نائلٍfavor أوor موعدِpromise
O heart of one who loves, dwelling-place of sighs,
O you who lodge sighs in your lover’s heart
In estrangement, is there any boon or promised tryst?
through estrangement—is there any favor or promise?
