شوقٌ تجدد في فؤاده

وهوىً تمكن من قياده

Longing renewed itself within his heart,

Longing has revived in his heart,

and passion took possession of his reins.

And passion has seized his reins.

ومدامعٌ تجري دماً

ومدامعٌ تجري دماً

من حرِّهن على رقاده

من حرِّهن على رقاده

And tears stream forth as blood,

And tears stream as blood,

made so by their burning heat upon his repose.

From their burning heat as he sleeps.

أفدي حبيباً لا يرقُّ

أفدي حبيباً لا يرقُّ

ولا يجيب إلى وداده

ولا يجيب إلى وداده

I would give myself for a beloved who will not soften,

I would ransom a beloved who shows no tenderness,

nor respond to the affection shown him.

Nor responds to his affection.

قد كان يرغب للوصا

قد كان يرغب للوصا

لِ فصارَ يبعدُ في بعاده

لِ فصارَ يبعدُ في بعاده

He once desired union;

He once longed for union,

why, then, has he begun withdrawing into distance?

But now grows ever more distant in his estrangement.
