بكىwept علىfor نفسهِhimself غريبُa stranger
نائيfar from الكرىsleep شوقُهُhis longing قريبُnear
A stranger wept for himself,
The stranger wept for himself,
Far from sleep, his longing near.
Though his longing for loved ones was near,
لهfor him ببغدادَin Baghdad حيثwhere يهوىhe loves
إلفٌa companion إلىto قلبهhis heart حبيبُdear
In Baghdad, where he loves, he has
For in Baghdad, where his heart delighted,
A companion dear to his heart:
Was a beloved friend so dear,
غصنٌa bough نضيرٌverdant علتهُrose above it شمسٌa sun
مشرقةٌradiant ماnot لهاfor it غروبُa sunset
A verdant bough above which a sun has risen,
A radiant sun, like a fresh green branch,
Radiant, with no sunset.
That never set, was always near,
وكيفَand how يرجىis hoped for الحياةlife صبٌa lovesick man
قدalready غابَhas gone away عنfrom دائهِhis ailment الطبيبُthe physician
And how can a lovesick man hope for life,
How could he hope to live, O morning dew!
When the physician for his ailment has gone away?
When his healer was no longer here.
