A sore eyelid and a wasted youth;
A slender youth with sleepy eyes,
A deadly passion has kept his eyes sleepless.
His passion set my glance afire,
عالجَstruggled with منfrom وجدٍardent longing بهِwithin him عِشرةًintimacy
يَيبسُdries up منهاfrom it غصنُهُhis branch الذابلُthe withered
He has struggled with an intimacy born of the longing within him;
He cured his lovesickness through my love,
His withered branch dries up from it.
Reviving branches once gone dry.
فبعضُهُso part of him يبكيweeps علىover بعضهِpart of him
وفيهand within him منهfrom himself شغلٌcare شاغلُall-consuming
So one part of him weeps over another,
Each part laments another part,
And within him, from himself, is an all-consuming care.
Preoccupied, all-engrossing pain,
ياO مدنفَlanguishing الأجفانِthe eyelids صِلgrant union to مُدنفاًa lovesick man
ضلَّwas at a loss لهfor him المُسعدthe consoler والعاذلُand the reproacher
O languid-eyed one, grant union to a lovesick man,
Oh he who shuts his lids, show kindness to one who's shut them too,
Whose consoler and reproacher alike are at a loss.
Both blessed and rejected strayed from love's true course.
