A heart wept within a captive's soul,
A heart wept in the conscience of a captive
helping an eye to weep with hidden tears.
Whose eyes delighted in tears concealed
كِلاهُماboth of them عذباwere tormented بِماfor what جَنياthey both committed
فَمنso who رأىhas seen مدنفينtwo lovesick sufferers فيin بدنِa body
Both were tormented for what they had done;
Both were tormented by what they reaped
who, then, has seen two lovesick sufferers in one body?
So who would see two afflicted in one body?
كساهماclothed them both الوجدُlove's anguish حلةًa robe بليتwore out
وهيthough it is جديدٌnew منof صنعةthe making الحزنِof sorrow
Love's anguish clothed them both in a robe that wore out,
Passion clothed them in tattered robes
though still new, of sorrow's making.
Woven by sorrow's hand anew
وَكلand all هَذاthis شوقٌlonging إلىfor حسنٍHasan
لمnot يُرزقاthey both were granted منof فَعالهِhis conduct الحسنِgood
And all this is longing for Hasan,
All this - yearning for a beauty
yet neither has been blessed with his kind treatment.
That was not granted from its fair deeds
