يومٌ تقضى بالصدودِ
وبمحنةِand in the torment of الواشيthe slanderer الحَسودِthe envious
وبمحنةِ الواشي الحَسودِ
A day has passed in rejection,
and in the torment of the envious slanderer.

ما أولعَ النومَ المشو
مَcompletion of 'ill-omened' بكلِّof every محزونٍgrieving one عميدِlovesick
مَ بكلِّ محزونٍ عميدِ
How fond ill-omened sleep is
of every grieving, lovesick one!
قدindeed كنتُI used to أطمعُI hope أنto أرىI see
قد كنتُ أطمعُ أن أرى
حسنَthe beauty of الخدودِthe cheeks علىagainst الخدودِthe cheeks
حسنَ الخدودِ على الخدودِ
I once hoped to see
the beauty of cheeks against cheeks;
فاليومَso today أقصىthe utmost غايتيmy aim
فاليومَ أقصى غايتي
فيin أنthat أراهُI see him منfrom بعيدِafar
في أن أراهُ من بعيدِ
so today my utmost aim
is to see him from afar.
