قَريحُ الفؤادِ قريحُ الجفونِ
كثيرُabundant البكاءweeping طويلُlong الحَنينِyearning
كثيرُ البكاء طويلُ الحَنينِ
Heart wounded, eyelids sore,
Wounded of heart, sore of eyelids,
Abundant in weeping, prolonged in longing;
Much given to weeping, long in yearning.
يَذوقُhe tastes الخَليُّthe carefree man لذيذَsweet الكَرَىsleep
يَذوقُ الخَليُّ لذيذَ الكَرَى
ويقطعُand he spends ليلتَهُhis night بالأنينِwith moaning
ويقطعُ ليلتَهُ بالأنينِ
The carefree taste the sweetness of slumber,
The carefree man savors sweet slumber,
While he passes his night in moaning.
While he spends his night in moans.
عَصىhe defied مَنwhoever يلومُreproaches وقاسىand he endured الهُمومَthe sorrows
عَصى مَن يلومُ وقاسى الهُمومَ
بجسمٍwith a body سقيمٍailing وقلبٍand a heart حزينِsorrowful
بجسمٍ سقيمٍ وقلبٍ حزينِ
He defied whoever reproached him and endured his sorrows
He defied those who reproach him and endured sorrows,
With a sickly body and a grieving heart:
With an ailing body and a sorrowful heart.
ذهابُloss النفوسِthe souls وجهدُand weariness القلوبِthe hearts
ذهابُ النفوسِ وجهدُ القلوبِ
ودَمعُand tears العيونِthe eyes بلحظِfrom the glance of العيونِthe eyes
ودَمعُ العيونِ بلحظِ العيونِ
Souls departing, hearts worn to exhaustion,
The loss of souls and the weariness of hearts,
And eyes shedding tears at the glances of eyes.
And the tears of eyes—all from the glance of eyes.
