كتبتُI wrote إليكَto you بماءِwith the water of الجفونِthe eyelids
وقلبيand my heart بماءِwith the water of الهَوىlove مُشرَبُimbued
I wrote to you with the water of my eyelids,
I weep for you with my eyes' waters
and my heart is steeped in the water of love.
And my heart is drunk with love's draft
فكفِّيso my palm تخطwrites وقلبيand my heart يملُّdictates
وعينايَand my two eyes تمحوerase الذيwhat أكتبُI write
So my palm writes and my heart dictates,
So my hand writes and my heart grows weary
and my eyes erase what I write.
And my eyes erase what I scribe
فليسَso it is not يتمُّcompleted كتابيmy letter إليكَto you
لشوقيbecause of my longing فمنso from هاbehold (attention particle) هناhere أعجبُI marvel
So my letter to you remains unfinished,
Thus my letter to you is not completed
because of my longing—and at this I marvel.
For my longing - is this not more wondrous?
