يَطولُgrows long اشتكائيmy lament ولاand not يفهمُhe understands
ويعلمُand he knows منيَof me ماwhat أعلَمُI know
My lament grows long, yet he does not understand.
My complaining grows long though none understands,
And he knows of me what I know.
And He knows what I know from me,
وَلِلشوقِand for longing فيin كبدِيmy liver زفرةٌa sigh
تضمَّنهاhas harbored it بدنٌa body مسقَمُsickened
And longing has a sigh within my liver,
And longing in my liver has a sigh,
Which a sickened body has harbored.
Containing a body made frail,
وأكتمُand I conceal ماwhat نالَنيhas befallen me جاهداًstriving hard
وعينيand my eye تبوحُspeaks openly بِماof what أكتمُI conceal
And I strive to conceal what has befallen me,
And I conceal what has befallen me with effort,
And my eye reveals what I conceal.
While my eyes reveal what I conceal,
سلمتَyou have been spared منfrom الوجدِlove's anguish ياO عِلَّتيmy affliction
علىdespite أننيthe fact that I منكَfrom you لاnot أسلمُam safe
You have been spared love's anguish, O my affliction,
You are safe from passion, O my sickness,
Though I am not safe from you.
Though from you I am not safe.
