ياO زفراتٍsighs نفينwere expelled عنfrom كبديmy liver
وماand whatever عليلُailing السقامِillness فيin جسديmy body
O sighs expelled from my liver,
O sighs that lament from my liver
And whatever is stricken with sickness in my body,
Though no sickness afflicts my frame
وياand O جفوناًeyelids تقطرتdripped بدمٍwith blood
عنfrom ناظرٍan eye موقفٍheld fast علىin السهدِsleeplessness
And O eyelids that have dripped with blood,
O eyelids dripping with blood
From an eye held fast in sleeplessness.
From eyes fixed upon wakefulness
إنif نلتِyou (feminine) attained وصلاًunion بذاat this عجبٌa marvel
أوor كنتِyou (feminine) were حرباًa foe فلاthen not علىagainst أحدِanyone
If you attain union, that is a marvel;
If you gain union it would be strange
Or if you are a foe, then against no one.
Or if you were war, it would be on no one
واكبداًalas for a liver ماnever انثنتturned إلىtoward فرحٍjoy
إلاexcept that رأتit saw مثلهits equal منof الكمدِgrief
Alas for a liver that never turned toward joy
O liver that has never bent toward joy
Without seeing its equal in grief.
Unless it saw the like from anguish
