أظهرتُI revealed منof كَمديmy anguish ماwhat كانَwas مَستوراhidden
فصارَso it became ماwhat لَمdid not أزلI cease أطويهِI fold it away مَنشوراspread open
I revealed what had been hidden of my anguish.
I revealed what was hidden of my inner pain
So what I had never ceased to fold away was spread open.
And so what I had always concealed became exposed
ولمand did not أجِدI find عندَin قلبٍa heart لاnot يُساعِدنيhelps me
صَبراًpatience علىwith القتلِthe slaying بالهجرانِby abandonment مَشكواlamented
Nor did I find, in a heart that does not aid me,
And I did not find in a heart that would not help me
patience for the lamented slaying by abandonment.
Patience over being killed by estrangement, any consolation
إذاwhen انصرفتُI turned إلىto أنthat كيفَhow أنتyou ولمand why
أصبحتُI became فيكَconcerning you بعقبِin the wake of الذلِّthe humiliation مَعذوراexcused
When I turned to asking how you are, and why
When I turned to see how you were, and had not
I had become excused concerning you after humiliation,
Become, after such humiliation, exonerated
علمتُI knew أنكَthat you معنىthe meaning الناسِof people كلّهمall of them
وإنand if أجبتُكَI answered you أمراًa matter كانwas مَقدوراforeordained
I knew that you are the meaning of all people,
I knew that you embodied the meaning of all mankind
and if I answered you, it was a matter foreordained.
And if I had obeyed you, it would have been destined
