أمنتهى الواصفين إن وصفُوا

أمنتهى الواصفين إن وصفُوا

ولا يدانوا له وإن كلَفوا

ولا يدانوا له وإن كلَفوا

O utmost reach of describers, should they describe,

Were all eloquent describers to portray

and they cannot come near him, even if they take pains;

They still could not do justice, though they essay

وغايةَ العينِ عند لَحظتِها

وغايةَ العينِ عند لَحظتِها

ومن عليهِ دموُعها تكِفُ

ومن عليهِ دموُعها تكِفُ

and the eye's ultimate goal when it glances,

The eye's delight is in its very glance

and the one for whom its tears drip.

And he on whom its tears descend, they sway

قد صرفَ العاذلون عذلهُمُ

قد صرفَ العاذلون عذلهُمُ

عني والوجد ليسَ يَنصرِفُ

عني والوجد ليسَ يَنصرِفُ

The reproachers have turned their reproach

My censurers turn on others all their blame

away from me, but passion does not turn away.

From me; but longing is not turned away

وطالَ شوقي فما أحاولُ أن

وطالَ شوقي فما أحاولُ أن

أشكو إلى اللَهِ أنني دَنِفُ

أشكو إلى اللَهِ أنني دَنِفُ

And my longing has lasted long, yet I do not try to

So long my passion that I do not try

complain to God that I am wasted by illness.

To plain to God that I am passion's prey
