لستُI do not أنساهُforget him فأذكرُهُand then remember him

لمhas not يغبbeen absent عنيfrom me فأنكرُهso I fail to recognize him
لم يغب عني فأنكرُه
I do not forget him and then remember him;
I have not forgotten him, so I remember him
he has not been absent from me, that I should fail to recognize him.
He did not disappear from me, so I deny him
صارَhas passed منfrom عينيmy eye إلىinto بدنيmy body
صارَ من عيني إلى بدني
شخصُهُhis form فالقلبُand so the heart يبصرُهsees him
شخصُهُ فالقلبُ يبصرُه
From my eye into my body has passed
From my eyes to my body
his form, and so the heart beholds him.
His image, so my heart sees him
منhe who يريكَshows you الشمسَthe sun طالعةًrising
من يريكَ الشمسَ طالعةً
فيin سوادِthe blackness of الليلِthe night جوهرُهhis essence
في سوادِ الليلِ جوهرُه
He who shows you the sun rising
Who shows you the rising sun
in the blackness of night through his essence—
In the darkness of night, its essence
عِزهُhis glory يطويهِconceals him عنfrom بصريmy sight
عِزهُ يطويهِ عن بصري
وانتشارand the spreading of النومِsleep يُظهرُهreveals him
وانتشار النومِ يُظهرُه
his glory hides him from my sight,
His glory hides him from my sight
and the spreading of sleep reveals him.
