كئيبُ الفؤادِ طويلُ الدنَف

كئيبُ الفؤادِ طويلُ الدنَف

قليلُ العزاء كثيرُ الأسَف

قليلُ العزاء كثيرُ الأسَف

Sorrowful at heart, long afflicted with wasting sickness;

The heart is gloomy, lengthy is its sigh

With little solace and much sorrow.

Little is its solace, abundant its anguish

يُردّدُ في طرفهِ دَمعَه

يُردّدُ في طرفهِ دَمعَه

فباحَ بكتمانِ ما قد سَلَف

فباحَ بكتمانِ ما قد سَلَف

He keeps turning his tears back within his eye,

It repeats in its glance its teardrop

Then speaks openly of what he had kept hidden before.

So it confided the secret of what had passed

وَصرَّف للعاذلينَ الهَوى

وَصرَّف للعاذلينَ الهَوى

وأسلمهُ صبرُهُ فاعترَف

وأسلمهُ صبرُهُ فاعترَف

And he explained his passion to those who reproached him;

And turned to the reproachers of passion

And his patience abandoned him, so he confessed.

And its patience conceded so it confessed

وفر إلى اللَهِ من حَيرةٍ

وفر إلى اللَهِ من حَيرةٍ

إذا شاءَ من عاشقيه انتصَف

إذا شاءَ من عاشقيه انتصَف

And he fled to God from bewilderment;

And it fled to God from confusion

If he wills, he exacts his due from his lovers.

If He willed, from its lovers it gained vengeance
