نسبٌa bond of kinship إليهِto him موكلٌentrusted بالناظرِto the eye
نسبٌ إليهِ موكلٌ بالناظرِ
فرسولُthus, a messenger لحظةِa glance كلّevery طرفٍeye فاترِlanguid
فرسولُ لحظةِ كلّ طرفٍ فاترِ
A bond of kinship with him is entrusted to the eye;
Linked to Him, is an observer entrusted
Thus, the messenger of every languid eye's glance.
So the messenger of each languishing glance
قطعَpassed الزمانthe time بيwith me الهوىlove متلذذاًtaking delight
قطعَ الزمان بي الهوى متلذذاً
متحيراًbewildered فيin ملكِthe dominion أحورَa dark-eyed one قاصرِof restrained gaze
متحيراً في ملكِ أحورَ قاصرِ
Love passed the time with me, taking delight,
He severed time between me and passion, delighted
Bewildered in the dominion of a dark-eyed one of restrained gaze.
Perplexed in the kingdom of a charming adolescent
نورٌa light أضاءَshone بهby it إليهtoward him مكملٌmade perfect
نورٌ أضاءَ به إليه مكملٌ
بالحسنِby beauty ممزوجٌmingled بغصنٍwith a bough ناضرِverdant
بالحسنِ ممزوجٌ بغصنٍ ناضرِ
A light by which he shone toward him, made perfect
A light by which He made visible to him the perfect one
By beauty, mingled with a verdant bough.
In beauty mixed with a tender branch
لمdid not يمتَنعrefuse قلبٌa heart دعاهُhe summoned it بطرفهِwith his glance
لم يمتَنع قلبٌ دعاهُ بطرفهِ
مِنfrom أنto يكونَbe كواقعٍlike one fallen أوor طائرِone in flight
مِن أن يكونَ كواقعٍ أو طائرِ
No heart he summoned with his glance refused
No heart that his glance called
To be like one fallen or one in flight.
Refused to be a fallen one or a bird
