وواحدٍ في الجمالِ فردٍ

أفردتهُ بالهوى الفريدِ

And one, peerless in beauty,

One beyond compare in beauty's dress

I singled him out with peerless love;

To him alone has passion I confess

مكتنزِ الحسنِ جوهريٍّ

مكتنزِ الحسنِ جوهريٍّ

ما فيهِ للحسنِ من مزيدِ

ما فيهِ للحسنِ من مزيدِ

Replete with beauty, jewel-like,

A treasure of perfection, nothing less

There is no room in him for further beauty.

No loveliness itself could him impress

تشبهُهُ الشمسُ من قريبٍ

تشبهُهُ الشمسُ من قريبٍ

منكَ إذا كانَ من بعيدِ

منكَ إذا كانَ من بعيدِ

The sun resembles him when close

The sun itself to him cannot compare

To you, if he is far away.

Though from afar he shines beyond all measure

تستمطِرُ العينُ ما سَقاها

تستمطِرُ العينُ ما سَقاها

من ماءِ خدَّيهِ بالصدودِ

من ماءِ خدَّيهِ بالصدودِ

The eye calls forth as rain what he gave it to drink

Tears pour forth when eyes his cheeks lay bare

Of his cheeks’ water, through his turning away.

Rivulets from his visage take their pleasure
