وَضعَhe placed الدُّموعَthe tears مواضعَplaces الحُزنِof sorrow
وَضعَ الدُّموعَ مواضعَ الحُزنِ
حيُّalive التَّسهُّدِsleeplessness ميِّتُdead الجَفنِthe eyelid
حيُّ التَّسهُّدِ ميِّتُ الجَفنِ
He placed tears in the places of sorrow,
He placed tears in the place of sorrow,
Alive in sleeplessness, with lifeless eyelids.
Alive with sighing, dead of eyelid.
عبراتهُhis tears تُنطِقُgive voice to ماwhat ضمِّنتwere made to contain
عبراتهُ تُنطِقُ ما ضمِّنت
أحشاؤُهُhis entrails ولسانُهُand his tongue يكنيspeaks indirectly
أحشاؤُهُ ولسانُهُ يكني
His tears give voice to what is lodged
His tears speak what his breast concealed,
In his entrails, while his tongue speaks in hints.
His tongue only hinted.
فيin كلِّevery جارحةٍlimb لهُof his مُقلٌeyes
في كلِّ جارحةٍ لهُ مُقلٌ
تبكيweep علىover قلبٍa heart لهُof his رَهنِheld in pledge
تبكي على قلبٍ لهُ رَهنِ
In every limb of his are eyes
In each of his organs is an eye
Weeping over his heart, held in pledge.
That weeps for a heart it has in pawn.
لمdid not يبقَremain إلاexcept حينَwhen أسلمَهُsurrendered him
لم يبقَ إلا حينَ أسلمَهُ
قدرٌfate للحظةِto the glance of واحدِone peerless in الحُسنِbeauty
قدرٌ للحظةِ واحدِ الحُسنِ
He survived only when he was surrendered
All that remains is the moment when
By fate to the glance of one peerless in beauty.
Fate surrenders him to the beautiful instant.
