لمdid not يبكِweep إلاexcept وهوwhile he was مهجورُforsaken
إنif نفدَran out الدمعُthe tears فمعذورُthen he is excused
He did not weep except when he was forsaken.
None weep but those abandoned,
If his tears run dry, he is excused.
If tears are spent, they're excused.
غايةُthe utmost aim منof one who ليسَthere is not لهfor him حيلةٌany recourse
ألاthat not يرىbe seen فيin الحبِّlove تقصيرُany failing
The utmost aim of one who has no recourse
The limit of one powerless
Is that no failing be seen in love.
Is not to see shortcoming in love.
إنif قلتُI said للعاذلِto the reproacher لاnot سرَّنيgladdened me
منهfrom him وكتمانٌand concealment وتعذيرُand excuse-making
If I speak to the reproacher, he brings me no joy;
If to a reproacher I say, "You don't delight me,"
From him come concealment and excuse-making.
It's evasion and excuse.
ياO نائماsleeper عنheedless of ساهرٍa sleepless man مدنفٍwasted by lovesickness
عزاءُthe solace صبرٍof patience كلهُall of it نشورُresurrection
O sleeper, heedless of a sleepless, lovesick man,
O you who sleep while one awake and pinchèd watches,
The solace of patience is nothing but resurrection.
The solace of patience is all wakefulness.
