باللَهِ والدمعِ أستعين

باللَهِ والدمعِ أستعين

فإنَّهُ ليسَ لي مُعينُ

فإنَّهُ ليسَ لي مُعينُ

I seek help from God and tears,

By God and tears I seek aid

For I have no helper.

طالَ اشتِياقي إليكَ حتى

طالَ اشتِياقي إليكَ حتى

تكلَّم الجسمُ والجفونُ

تكلَّم الجسمُ والجفونُ

My longing for you has lasted so long that

My longing for you grew so long

The body and the eyelids have spoken:

That my body and eyelids spoke

هَذا بِسُقمٍ وَذا بِدمعٍ

هَذا بِسُقمٍ وَذا بِدمعٍ

وهَكَذا يَفعلُ الحَزينُ

وهَكَذا يَفعلُ الحَزينُ

This one through sickness, and that one through tears.

This one with sickness and that with tears

And thus the sorrowful one acts.

Thus acts the sorrowful one

يا غايةَ النفسِ في الأماني

يا غايةَ النفسِ في الأماني

وَمن إِلى وَجههِ الحَنينُ

وَمن إِلى وَجههِ الحَنينُ

O the soul's ultimate goal among its hopes,

O object of my soul's desires

And you toward whose face longing turns,

For whom I yearn

ليسَ سرورٌ ولا ابتهاجٌ

ليسَ سرورٌ ولا ابتهاجٌ

يا أملي حيثُ لا تكونُ

يا أملي حيثُ لا تكونُ

There is neither joy nor delight,

There is no joy or delight

O my hope, wherever you are not.

My hope, when you are not there
