What traces and ruins have stirred you today—

some still clear, and others effaced and worn—

between al-Sanam, its two hollows, and Dhu Baqar,

like pages inscribed by a reciter?

    أَقَوَت مَنازِلُها مِن بَعدِ أَحوالِ

    Qayla's dwelling, when my heart was enamored of her;

her abodes have fallen empty after years.

Wild cows roam there, and the wide-eyed ones have young,

moving toward calves clustered close, and newborns.

I spent the day there grieving, unable to bear

my sorrow; my tears poured down in torrents.

And a stout-built she-camel, her elbows set wide apart,

wild-ass-strong, fleet as a powerful ostrich:

small-headed, whiteness showing along his flanks,

    black-backed, hoarse-voiced, loudly resonant.

He goes at dawn to lean females with shaggy down,

his cry like a shout of acclamation.

Or atop a white-girdled wild ass traversing Waqisa's sands,

in a herd, alike as strips of merchants' cloth.

His hock is stained from tearing out roots with it,

of rukhama plants, on both sides of Hazm Awral.

Summer's scorching wind blew blazing over him,

and cut off his water at the beginning of Shawwal,

save scant pools, which he never ceases digging for,

at the summit of a lofty, towering, shade-giving crag,

green, clothed just below the sun in the water's scum,

or algae—trickling waters high in the narrow rock cleft.

As though an ill-omened star were at a night's resting place,

or a Persian wearing a threadbare tunic.

Then she bore you through a wilderness veiled in murk,

where owls cry, with a sandhill and miles of ground.

The riders call out; they have strayed from their road,

and seek safety with a guide who does not lead astray.

If you turn away and withhold your favors from us,

then, when you form a bond, form it with men like me.

    أُصَرِّفُ الأَمرَ مِن حالٍ إِلى حالِ

    I am patient under whatever befalls, accepting it;

I turn affairs from one state to another.

I trace my descent to the glory of forefathers with strength in numbers,

valiant men, subduing others beneath the tread of right,

who rise to a task that none can face

but they; and they shoulder heavy burdens,

and feed others when a wind from Syria blows,

scattering brittle stalks, with old dead brushwood lying there.

And a fearsome watch-post, approached by none

of the easygoing, save a wary, unencumbered man—

they have accustomed it to every long-limbed mare led through,

outstripping the army, fine-barreled and long-tailed.

Returning, they tug at their halter-leads,

like bows whose curved limbs the long-range archer has pared.
