أياO أَيُّهاyou المُهديthe giver of لِيَto me الشَتمَabuse ظالِماًunjustly
وَلَستُand I am not بِأَهلٍat all deserving حينَwhen أُذكَرُI am mentioned لِلشَتمِof abuse
O you who unjustly offer me abuse,
O Mahdi who insults me unjustly
though, when I am mentioned, I do not deserve abuse.
I am not deserving when I am mentioned with insult
أَبىprecluded الشَتمَabuse أَنّيthat I am سَيِّدٌa chief وَاِبنُand a son of سادَةٍchiefs
مَطاعينَfierce spearmen فيin الهَيجاbattle مَطاعيمَlavish feeders لِلجُرمِfor the multitude
My being a chief and the son of chiefs bars such abuse—
Insult refuses that I am a master and son of masters
fierce spearmen in battle, lavish feeders of the multitude.
Obeyed in heyjah, obeyed for crime
هُمthey مَنَحواbestowed الضُرّاsuffering أَباكَyour father وَطاعَنواand fought with spears
وَذاكَand that one الَّذيwho يُرمىis shot at ذَليلاًhumiliated وَلاand does not يَرميshoot
They bestowed suffering on your father and fought with spears,
They granted harm upon your father and stabbed
and he is the one shot at in humiliation, who does not shoot back,
And that which is thrown disgracefully and does not throw
كَمُستَلحَمٍlike one surrounded by enemies فيin ظُلمَةِthe darkness of اللَيلِthe night مِحزِماًgirt (reading uncertain)

like a man hemmed in, girt, in the darkness of night,
Like a shaved in the darkness of night, belted
who saw sheer death and swords drawing blood.
Saw death turning and the swords with it stabbing
أَدِبّI crawl عَلىupon أَنماطِpatterned rugs بَيضاءَa fair-skinned woman حُرَّةٍfreeborn
مُقابَلَةِequally noble through الجَدَّينِboth grandfathers ماجِدَةِnoble in العَمِthe paternal uncle
I crawl upon the patterned rugs of a fair, freeborn woman,
Educated on the patterns of free white (women)
noble through both grandfathers, with an illustrious paternal uncle.
Facing the two grandfathers, glorious pillar
وَأَنتَand you لِحُنَفاءِof a woman crooked in اليَدَينِboth hands لَوif أَنَّهاshe
تُباعُwere sold لِماthen not جاءَتshe would fetch بِزِندٍa fire-stick وَلاnor سَهمِan arrow
But you belong to a crooked-handed woman; were she
And you for skilled hands, if sold
sold, she would not fetch a fire-stick or an arrow.
Would not have come with a spear or arrow
وَإِنيand indeed I عَلىupon ماwhat كانَwas أَوَّلُthe earliest of أَوَّليmy forebears
عَلَيهِupon it كَذاكَjust so القَرمُthe stud camel يُنتَجُis born لِلقَرمِto the stud camel
And I hold to what the earliest of my forebears
And I am upon what was the first of firsts
held to: thus a stud camel is born to a stud camel.
Upon it is the palm produced for the palm
وَأُكرِمُand I honor نَفسيmyself عَنabove أُمرٍaffairs دَنيئَةٍbase
أَصونُI safeguard بِهاwith it عِرضيmy honor وَآسوand I heal بِهاwith it كَلميmy wound
And I hold myself above base affairs;
And I honor myself from a lowly matter
thereby I guard my honor and heal my wound.
With which I protect my honor and console my words
وَأَصفَحُand I pardon عَمَّنone whom لَوif أَشاءُI wish جَزَيتُهُI would requite him
فَيَمنَعُنيso restrains me رُشديmy sound judgment وَيُدرُكنيand overtakes me حُلُميmy forbearance
And I pardon one whom, if I wished, I could requite,
And I pardon whoever, if I wished, I would repay him
but my sound judgment restrains me, and my forbearance overtakes me.
But my rationality prevents me and my patience reaches me
وَأَغفِرُand I forgive لِلمَولىthe kinsman وَإِنand even if ذوguilty of عَظيمَةٍa grave offense
عَلىdespite البَغيِthe injustice مِنهاfrom it لاnot يَضيقُis constricted بِهاby it جُرميmy frame
And I forgive my kinsman, even if guilty of a grave offense;
And I forgive the master even if of great
despite its injustice, my frame is not constricted by it.
Transgression, it does not narrow within my body
فَهَذيِso these فِعاليmy deeds ماas long as بَقيتُI live وإنَّنيand indeed I
لَموصٍsurely enjoining بِهاconcerning them عَقبيmy descendants وَقَوميand my people وَذاand one sharing رَحميkinship with me
These are my deeds as long as I live, and indeed I
So these are my actions as long as I remain
surely enjoin them upon my descendants, my people, and my blood-kin.
Entrusted with them are my consequence, my people, and my kin
