ياO دارَdwelling of أَسماءَAsma بَينَbetween السَفحِal-Safh فَالرُحبand al-Ruhb
أَقوىbecame deserted وَعَفّىand effaced عَلَيهاover it ذاهِبُthe passing of الحقبِthe ages
O dwelling of Asma, between al-Safh and al-Ruhb,
O house of Asma in the valley's slope and expanse
It became deserted, and passing ages effaced its traces.
Stronger fate prevails, as time’s march tramples all
فَماand nothing تَبَيَّنَwas discernible مِناof us غَيرُexcept مُنتَضِدٍa piled-up remnant
وَراسِياتٍand firmly set stones ثَلاثٍthree حَولَaround مُنتَصِبِan upright remnant
No trace of us was visible except a piled-up remnant,
Nothing of us remains but some leaning posts
and three firmly set stones around an upright remnant;
And three pillars standing round a palm-trunk tall
وَعَرصَةِand the open courtyard of الدارِthe dwelling تَستَنُّrace الرِياحُthe winds بِهاthrough it
تَحِنُّthey moan فيهاwithin it حَنينَthe lament of الوالِهِone distraught السُلُبِbereaved
and the dwelling's open courtyard, where the winds race,
The courtyard where the winds blow soft and slow
moaning there like one distraught and bereaved.
Sighing as exiles for their long lost home pine
دارٌa dwelling لاof (split spelling) سماءَAsma (name continued) إِذwhen قَلبيmy heart بِهاof her كَلِفٌenamored
وَإِذand when أُقَرِّبُI make approaches مِنهاto her غَيرَwithout مُقتَرِبِdrawing close
Asma's dwelling, when my heart was enamored of her,
A house no home, since my heart is not there
and when I made approaches to her without coming close.
Though to it my steps draw near but cannot align
إِنَّindeed الحَبيبَthe beloved الَّذيwhom أَمسَيتُI have come to أَهجُرُهُI shun him
عَنout of غَيرِno مَقلِيَّةٍhatred مِنّيfrom me وَلاnor غَضِبِanger
Indeed, the beloved whom I have come to shun—
The darling I shun is not from spite or rage
not from hatred on my part, nor from anger—
But wariness, lest talkers do us defame
أَصُدُّI turn away عَنهُfrom him اِرتِقاباًout of caution أَنlest أُلِمَّI pay a visit بِهِto him
وَمَنand whoever يَخَفfears قالَةَthe gossip of الواشينَthe tale-bearers يَرتَقِبِkeeps watch
I turn away from the beloved, wary of paying a visit;
For I protect a dignity generously given
and whoever fears the tale-bearers' gossip keeps watch.
Despite warnings, as my nature disdains all blame
إِنّيindeed I حَوَيتُhave gained عَلىabove الأَقوامِthe peoples مَكرَمَةًa noble distinction
قدماًlong ago وَحَذَّرَنيand warned me ماwhat يَتَّقونَthey guard against أَبىmy father
Indeed, I have won distinction above other peoples,
Counsel from one of wisdom, insight and care
long ago; and my father warned me against what they guard against.
An intelligent tester, far from doubts that mar
فَقالَthen he said ليto me قَولَthe words of ذيone possessing رَأَيٍjudgment وَمَقدِرَةِand ability
Then he spoke to me as one possessing judgment and ability,
"Honor you've gained, take care not to stain it
experienced, discerning, and free of suspicion:
A generous father, flawless lineage so far"
قَدindeed نِلتُI have attained مَجداًglory فَحاذِرso beware أَنthat تُدنّسَهُyou sully it
أَبٌa father كَريمٌnoble وَجَدٌand a grandfather غَيرُnot مَؤتَشِبِof mixed lineage
I have won glory; so beware of sullying it.
I commanded you to righteousness, now heed
A noble father, and a grandfather of unmixed lineage.
I leave you wealthy, grown, and free to succeed
أَمرتُكَI commanded you الرُشدَright conduct فَاِفعَلso do ماwhat أُمِرتَyou were commanded بِهِto do it
فَقَدfor indeed تَركتُكُI have left you ذاpossessing مالٍwealth وذَاand possessing نَشَبِproperty
I commanded you to act rightly; do what you were commanded to do.
Leave the ways of folk with no virtue within
For I have left you with wealth and property.
Hold to the morals of excellence and breeding
وَاِترُكand abandon خَلائِقَthe habits of قَومٍa people لاno خَلاقَshare in goodness لَهُمfor them
وَاِعمدand seek لأخَلاقtoward the character of أَهلpeople of الفَضلِvirtue وَالأَدَبِand refinement
And abandon the ways of people who have no share in goodness,
If called to betrayal or ordered thereto
and seek the character of people of virtue and refinement.
Flee from it with all speed, turn heel and take leave
وَإِنand if دُعيتَyou are called لَغَدرٍto treachery أَوor أُمِرتَyou are commanded بِهِto commit it
فَاِهربthen flee بِنَفسِكَwith your own self عَنهُfrom it أَيِّدِvigorous in الهَرَبِflight
And if you are called to treachery, or commanded to commit it,
Do not withhold wealth from proper use
then flee from it to save yourself, with all your strength.
No base greed or excess, but give what’s deserved
لاdo not تَبخَلَنَّever be miserly بِمالٍwith wealth عَنfrom مَذاهِبِهِits proper channels
مِنfrom غَيرِwithout ذِلَّةِthe humiliation of إِسرافٍextravagance وَلاnor ثَغَبِhunger (uncertain reading)
Do not withhold wealth from its proper channels,
For your heirs will not praise you, when you are gone
but without the humiliation of extravagance or hunger,
If they find but sour milk and palm wood to retrieve
فَإِنَّfor indeed وُرّاثَهُits heirs لَنwill not يَحمَدوكَpraise you لَهُfor it
إِذاwhen أَجنوكَthey bury you بَينَbetween اللَبنِmud bricks وَالخَشَبِand timbers
for its heirs will not praise you for it
when they bury you between mud bricks and timbers.
