أَقولُI say لَهُto him وَالرُمحُwhile the spear يَأَطِرُbends مَتنَهُhis back
تَأَمَّلَlook closely at خُفافاًKhufaf أَنَّنيthat I am أَناI myself ذَلِكاthat man
I say to him, as the spear bends his back:
Look closely at Khufaf: I am that very man.
وَقَفتُI halted لَهُto face him عَلوىAlwa وَقَدthough already خامَfaltered صُحبَتيmy companions
لأso that I may بنِيَbuild مَجداًrenown أَوor لأso that I may ثَأرَavenge هالِكاa slain man
I halted Alwa to face him, though my companions had faltered,
To build renown or avenge a slain man,
لَدُنfrom the time ذَرَّrose قَرنُthe horn الشَمسِof the sun حينَwhen رَأَيتهُمI saw them
سِراعاًhastening عَلىon خَيلِhorses تَؤُمُّheading toward المَسالِكاthe tracks
From the moment the sun's horn rose, when I saw them
Hurrying on horses making for the tracks.
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَيتُI saw القَومَthe men لاno وُدَّaffection بَينَهُمbetween them
شَريحَينِtwo bands شَتّىseparate طالِباًpursuing وَمُواشِكاand hastening
Then, when I saw the men with no love between them,
In two separate bands, one pursuing, one hastening—
تَيَمَّمتُI sought كَبشَthe ram القَومِof the host حَتّىuntil عَرَفتُهُI recognized him
وَجانَبتُand I avoided شبّانَthe youths الرَجالِamong the men الصَعالِكاthe penniless ones
I sought the ram of their host until I recognized him,
And kept clear of the penniless young men.
فَإِنso if تَكُbe خَيليmy cavalry قَدalready أُصيبَhas been struck صَميمُهاits very heart
فَعَمداًthen deliberately عَلىwith عَينٍclear sight تَيَمَّمتُI made for مالِكاMalik
So if my cavalry has been struck at its very heart,
Then deliberately, with open eyes, I made for Malik.
فَجادَتthen gave generously لَهُto him يُمنىthe right يَدَيَّof my two hands بِطَعنَةٍwith a spear-thrust
كَسَتclothed مَتنَهُhis back مِنof أَسوَدِblack اللَونِcolor حالِكاjet-black
My right hand then lavished on him a spear-thrust
That clothed his back in a jet-black hue.
فَخَرَّso he fell صَريعاًslain وَاِنتَقَذناand we seized جَوادَهُhis steed
وَحالَفَand he made a pact with بَعدَafter الأَهلِhis kin صُمّاًdeaf دَكادِكاlow mounds
So he fell slain, and we seized his steed,
And after his kin, he made a pact with deaf, low mounds.
أَناI الفارِسُthe horseman الحاميthe defender of الحَقيقَةَhonor وَالَّذيand the one
بِهِon it أُدرِكُI overtake الأَبطالَthe champions قدماًboldly forward كَذَلِكاlikewise
I am the horseman, defender of honor; and the steed
On which I overtake champions, boldly advancing, is likewise.
فَإِنso if يَنجُhe escapes مِنهاfrom it هاشِمٌHashim فَبِطَعنَةٍthen with a spear-wound
كَسَتهُclothed him نَجيعاًgore مِنfrom دَمِthe blood الجَوفِof the body's depths صائِكاclinging
So if Hashim escapes it, it is with a spear-wound
That clothed him in clinging gore from his body's depths.
