Umamah marveled when she saw me pale,
My shirt threadbare, and my head bald.

إنيindeed I am امرؤٌa man فيماin what أضرُّI harm وأنفعُand I benefit
And she sighed deeply; I told her, “Enough!
I am a man: in my dealings I harm and help.”

Easy, Abu Anas, for I am, to the one who
Left you free, a calamity that cannot be lifted.

And I dealt a blow where your skull's sutures meet,
So the ear was deafened by it in the clash.

My two sandals are cut like hers; and often
I requite the foe—and every aggressor has a place to fall.

Do not boast: my stock is a nabʿ tree,
That defied Abu Karib; your stock is castor wood.

Indeed, I lead against the foe a lean, long-legged steed,
Easy on the rein, with a long, high-held neck,

Full-flanked, the base of its neck lending it grace,
With taut hamstrings and great leg-veins that cannot be severed.

And I wear full-length mail, whose rivets are like
Grasshoppers' eyes; there is no weak point in it.

Fine mail, doubled, whose weave was chosen with care
By Dhu Fa'ish, the sons of al-Murar, and Tubbaʿ.

Among white-faced young men, as though they were
Lions at Bishah, watchful over flesh.

They do not flinch when they meet their enemies;
Indeed, death is the broad, open road.
