Ah, you have severed the tether to Salma,

yet brought no aid to what seeks support.

And the tribe’s departure took me unawares, when

their journey bore them far away, save for fleeting visits.

Nor is a tender, dark-eyed fawn,

ranging a meadow, visiting acacia after acacia,

at Wajra or in the bed of Aqiq Buss,

resting there at noon when the day stands still—

when it follows her tracks and she shows it tenderness,

she draws near from a nearby hollow, and it sleeps—

fairer than Sulayma when she comes in sight,

when, startled out of the dusk, it swims away.

Nor are the palms of Wajr, when they rise aloft,

wrapped in fruit-sheaths and nearing harvest—

    some lofty, and some low,

leaning over, crowding thickly around them—

more beautiful than the howdah-borne women of Salma’s clan,

on the morning they drank in the open at Sanam,

then headed for al-Yamama, traveling Iraqward,

and scanned the clouds at the meadow of Alija.

So if you turn away from me, O Salm,

and I find myself saying not a word to you,

for many a noble she-camel have I driven hard, until

she stands still when I turn her rein,

and until the ravens follow her

saddle scars, never straying beyond her hump.

Then she brings me, on the fourth or fifth day,

to the waters of high summer, their pools brimming.

Few are those beside them, save that I

flush doves from the paths leading down to them.

I startled the wolf digging at every trough,

and gnawing bones in their camel-resting grounds.

And many a day I was there with my companions,

that granted the men booty and shares.

You would take their riding camels, in every pass,

when they stood in nose-halters, for ostriches.
