أَعبّاسُO Abbas إِمّاif كَرِهتَyou have come to hate الحُروبَwars
فَقَدthen indeed ذُقتَyou have tasted مِنof عَضِّهاtheir bite ماwhat كَفىsufficed
O Abbas, if you have come to hate wars,
then you have indeed tasted enough of their bite.
أَأَلقَحتَdid you breed حَرباًa war لَهاit has شِدَّةٌfierceness
زَماناًfor a time تسَعُّرهاyou stoke it بِاللَظىwith blazing fire
Did you breed a war of great fury,
for a time stoking it with flame?
فَلَمّاthen when تَرَقَّيتَyou climbed higher فيin غَيِّهاits folly
دُحِضتَyou were made to slip وَزَلَّand slipped بِكَwith you المُرتَقىthe ascent
Then, when you climbed higher in its folly,
you were made to slip, and the ascent gave way beneath you.
فَلاso may ... never زِلتَyou cease تَبكيyou weep عَلىover زَلَّةٍa misstep
وَماذاand what يَرُدُّrestores عَلَيكَto you البُكاweeping
So may you never cease weeping over a misstep—
and what can weeping restore to you?
فَإِنfor if كُنتَyou were أَخطَأتَyou erred فيin حَربِناmaking war on us
فَلَسناthen we are not نُقيلُكَwe pardon you هَذاthis الخَطاmistake
For if you erred in making war on us,
then we will not pardon you for this mistake.
وَإِنand if كُنتَyou are تَطمَعُyou hope فيfor سلمِناpeace with us
فَزاوِلthen grapple with ثَبيراًThabir وَرُكنيand the two flanks of حِراHira
And if you hope for peace with us,
then grapple with Thabir and Hira's two flanks.
