Usayma came by night to the saddles, though between us stood

    Saʿid and then Kathib, in Fayd of Ghayqah;

Then al-Tawd and al-Malakat stood between us and her,

Then the heights of Quds, its depths, and Husub.

So if indeed you have cut the cord, O daughter of Malik,

And judgment in this may err or strike true,

Then know that I am a man of firm resolve,

    Unyielding before whatever calamities befall.

I abandon baseness and do not associate with its people,

And I have my share of time’s shrewdness.

And on a beaten tract, with sandgrouse eggs along its sides,

And crumbling bones and bare skeletons of white camels,

I startled its undisturbed birds and beasts of prey

With the lowing of a swift evening traveler, a brisk trotter—

A sturdy she-camel, as though the saddle sat upon a lean wild ass,

Bare at the cheekbones, worn lean by cantering.

Braying has turned its tongue aside, so it is like

A chieftain whenever it swells in rage to bray.

And I have descended to rain-fed pasture, my shoulder thrust forward

By a noble, long-tailed steed, like the lower shaft of a spear.

Restless when the bridle is drawn tight, it is like

A robbed man signaling with both hands.

Hot on the heels of the wild ewes, it is like,

When it runs in earnest, a full bucket with its water pouring out.

Hail driven headlong by the west wind over tiered heights,

Scattered across open slopes, with ravines between them.

Straining against the hand, it rises and presses forward,

Unflagging in its running, a swift, powerful steed.

Nimble in alternating strides when it stretches out, its hind leg

Shows a bowing as it lands and catches up.
