قدindeed بعثناهُwe sent it لكيْso that يُجْلَىmay be polished بهwith it
واضِحٌa bright tooth كاللؤُلؤِlike pearls الرَّطْبِmoist أَغَرْgleaming white
We have sent it so that it may polish
We sent him so that by him would be made clear,
A bright tooth, gleaming white like a moist pearl.
Like polished pearls glistening with dew,
طابَwas sweet منهfrom it العَرْفُthe fragrance حتىuntil خِلتُهُI thought it
كانَwas منfrom رِيقِكَyour saliva يُسْقَىbeing watered فيin الشَّجَرْthe trees
Its fragrance was so sweet that I thought it
The aroma of him made pleasant the atmosphere,
Was watered with your saliva on the tree.
As though from your saliva he was watered in the trees,
وهوand it أغْنىless in need عنهof it منthan عودِكَyour lute عَنْof
رَنّةِthe ringing tone النايthe flute إذاwhen النايُthe flute زمَرْplays
And it needs that less than your lute needs
And he is needless of it more than your staff
The flute's ringing tone when the flute plays.
Of the flute’s tune when the flute is played,
ليتَنيwould that I were المُهْدَىthe gift فيرويso it would quench عطشيmy thirst
بَرْدُcoolness أنيابِكyour canine teeth فيin كلِّevery سَحَرْpredawn hour
Would that I were the gift, so my thirst might be quenched
If only I were the guided one so my thirst would be quenched
By the coolness of your canine teeth before each dawn.
By the coolness of your fangs at every dawn,
وأماand indeed واللَّهِby God لوif يعلَمُit knew ماwhat
حظُّهُits share مِنْكَfrom you لأثْنَىit would surely praise وَشَكَرْand give thanks
And indeed, by God, if it knew what
By Allah if he knew his share of fortune from you
Its share from you was, it would surely praise and give thanks.
He would praise and give thanks.
