وَقَدْand sometimes يَنَالُdetracts مِنَfrom الأَشْرَافِthe noble أَوْضَاعُlowly men
The dregs of a people have made my honor fair game for their censure.
The rabble of a people who made my nobility fair game
And the lowly sometimes disparage the noble.
Though the lowly may also attain nobility
حَلُمْتُI showed forbearance عَنْهُمْtoward them فَأَغْرَاهُمْso it emboldened them لِجَهْلِهِمُbecause of their ignorance

I showed them forbearance; in their ignorance, they were emboldened
I was patient with them, so they took advantage of my patience
By my forbearance—and ignorance has companions and followers.
Due to their ignorance, for ignorance has partisans and followers
وَجَلَّand grew great قَدْرِيَmy stature فَاسْتَحَلُّواso they deemed permissible مُسَاجَلَتِيvying with me

And my stature was great, so they felt entitled to vie with me.
They made light of my worth, so they felt free to contend with me
Indeed, flies often alight on pure white honey.
Flies do alight on sweetmeats, it's their nature
