غَدَاhe went forth in the morning وَغَدَاand began تَوَرُّدُrosy bloom وَجْنَتَيْهِhis two cheeks

He went forth in the morning, and his cheeks’ rosy bloom began
The roses in his cheeks blush more each dawn
To portray gardens to his lover’s eye.
For the eyes of his lover who praises the garden
عَلَىupon خَدَّيْهِhis two cheeks مَاءٌwater عَسْجَدِيٌّgolden
إِذَاwhen نَظَرَlooked الرَقِيْبُthe watcher إِلَيْهِat him غَاضَاsubsided
Upon his cheeks is golden water,
His cheeks are like refreshing water
Which sinks away when the watcher looks at him.
That reddens when the watcher looks upon them
يُؤَمِّلُhopes for جَنَّةَthe garden of الفِرْدَوْسِParadise قَوْمٌsome people
وَآمُلُand I hope for مِنْهُfrom him شَمَّاa sniff أَوْor عِضَاضَاa bite
Some people hope for the garden of Paradise,
Some hope for heavenly paradise
And I hope for a sniff of him, or a bite.
While I hope for a scent or a kiss from him
غَزَالٌa gazelle كُلَّمَاwhenever ازْدَدْتُI increased اقْتِرَابَاًin closeness
إِلَيْهِto him زَادَhe increased بُعْدَاًin distance وانْقِبَاضَاand withdrawal
A gazelle—whenever I draw closer
He is a gazelle - the nearer I draw
To him, he grows more distant and withdrawn.
The further he flees and recoils
كَتَمْتُI concealed هَوَاهُmy love for him حَتَّىuntil فَاضَoverflowed دَمْعِيmy tears
فَصَيَّرَهُand turned it into حَدِيْثَاًa tale مُسْتَفَاضَاwidely told
I concealed my love for him until my tears overflowed,
I concealed my love till tears flowed free
And turned it into a tale widely told.
And made of it talk heard far and wide
