Enough for me, instead of diversion and instruments of delight,

    and wealth, equipment, and property,

and wine and clamoring lute strings,

and ambition aspiring to high ranks,

are gatherings kept free from suspicion,

    filled with every sought-after branch of knowledge;

they nearly blaze with the heat of conversation:

poetry, tales, and impromptu points of grammar,

and lexicography gathering the words of the Arabs,

and choice sayings, like a promise in a lover's heart,

    or like sustenance arriving unsought.

Yes, and enough for me among selected inkpots,

    adorned with silver and gold,

is an inkwell in which the astute scholar takes pride.

Its ears are pierced, and in the holes

are ornaments like the earrings of shy, fair-skinned, amorous maidens.

It holds a rain in which books find their verdure,

black, flowing with meanings like shooting stars.

Wisdom does not run dry unless that ink does.

It is tied to my left hand with a cord,

like an earring at the neck, dangling and swaying.

Accompanying it—as sisters keep each other company—

is a quiver entrusted with arrows of reed.

No feathers top them, nor are they wrapped in sinew.

The pages do not laugh until the pens sob.

With them my right hand shoots at the targets of writing,

shooting so that whenever I aim straight, I hit the mark.

And a knife like a keen sword, severing whatever it touches—

my anger against the pens, without a cause.

It assails them at every moment and pounces,

and it pleases you only in that anger.

    Those, then, are my tools, and my tools are beloved;

and elegance in tools is something desirable,

especially in those meant for literature.
