لَوif كُنتَyou were ياO مَنone who يَلومُنيblames me عَادِلْjust
ماnot كُنتَyou would be فِيمَنْconcerning the one whom هُوِيتُهI loved him عاذِلْa reproacher
If you were just, O you who blame me,
If you who blame me were just,
you would not reproach me for the one I love.
You would not be one who reproaches me.
أَصْبَحْتُI have become فِيin خِدْمَةِthe service of الغَرامِpassionate love وَلِيand I have
جَارٍa flowing stream مِنَfrom الْعَيْنِthe eye مُطْلَقٌunrestrained هامِلْpouring
I have come to serve passionate love, and I have
I have come to serve passion,
a stream from my eye, unrestrained and pouring.
With an eye flowing freely with tears.
قَلْبِيmy heart بِباقِيby what remains of هَواهُlove for him مُنْكَسِرٌbroken
وَحَمْلُand the burden of هَمِّيmy sorrow لأَجْلِهِfor his sake حاصِلْincurred
My heart is broken by the love for him that remains,
My heart is broken by the remainder of his love,
and I bear the burden of my sorrow for his sake.
And the burden of my sorrow because of him weighs heavy.
فَخَفِّفِso lighten الآنَnow عَنfrom فُؤادِthe heart of فَتىًa young man
عَلَيهِupon him شُغْلٌa preoccupation مِنfrom حُبِّهِlove for him شاغِلْall-consuming
So now ease the heart of a young man
So lighten now the heart of a young man,
burdened with an all-consuming preoccupation with love for him.
Whose occupation with his love keeps him busy.
ضَلَّstrayed الكَرَىsleep عَنaway from جُفونِthe eyelids of مُقْلَتِهِhis eye
فَدَمْعُهُso his tears عَنْهُafter it لَمْnot يَزَلْceased سائِلْinquiring
Sleep has strayed from the lids of his eye,
Sleep is lost from his heavy eyelids,
so his tears have never ceased asking after it.
And his tears have not ceased flowing from them.
ماnever سَحَّpoured فِيupon الخَدِّthe cheek قَطْرُdrops of أَدْمُعِهِhis tears
إِلاَّexcept that وَأَضْحَىand became خَصِيبُهاtheir fertile ground ماحِلْbarren
Never do drops of his tears pour upon his cheek
No drop moistened his cheek,
without their fertile ground becoming barren.
Except that it made the softness of it fertile.
مِنwho لِيfor me بِمُرخِيwith one who lets down الأصْداغِthe sidelocks بَلْبَلَهاhe tousled them
كَماas يَمُدُّspreads الحَبائِلَthe snares الحَابِلْthe trapper
Who will bring me the one who lets down his sidelocks, tangling them
Is there one for me who will make loose her braids,
as a trapper spreads his snares?
As a rope maker extends ropes?
الخَمْرُwine وَالسِّحْرُand sorcery فِيin لَواحِظِهِhis glances
قَدindeed شَهِداboth testified لِيto me بِأَنَّهاthat they are بَابِلْBabylon
The wine and sorcery in his glances
Wine and magic in her glances
have testified to me that they are Babylon.
Bore witness to me that she is bewitching.
وَخالُهُand his beauty spot بِالعِذارِin the cheek's down مُلْتَحِفٌwrapped
كَحارِسٍlike a watchman فِيin خَميلَةٍa thicket خامِلْidle
And his beauty spot is wrapped in his cheek's down,
And her mole, cloaked in coquetry,
like an idle watchman in a thicket.
Is like a guard in a relaxed, royal tent.
ماnot لِيfor me نَصِيرٌan ally عَلىin مَحَبَّتِهِlove for him
وَالصَّبْرُand patience لِيfor me فِيهِregarding him مِثْلَهُlike him خاذِلْfailing
I have no ally in my love for him,
I have no helper against his love,
and patience, like him, fails me where he is concerned.
And patience for me, like it, is treacherous.
الحَمْدُpraise لِلَّهِto God بِتُّI spent the night فِيin دَعَةٍease
لَستُI am not لِهَمٍّof any care غَيْرِother than الهِوِىlove حامِلْa bearer
Praise be to God: I have passed the night at ease,
Praise be to God, I live comfortably,
bearing no care but love.
Not carrying any concern other than passion.
وَالدَّهْرُand Fortune بَعدَafter الجِماحِunruliness قَدindeed عَطَفَتْturned
عِنانَهُits reins لِيfor me عِنايَةُthe care of الفَاضِلْal-Fadil
And Fortune, after running wild, has had
And time, after being unruly,
its reins turned for me by al-Fadil's care.
Has turned its reins to favor me, O noble one.
بَحْرٌa sea إِذْاwhen سَحَّhe pours forth وَالسَّحابَand the clouds مَعاًtogether
يَغِيضُdwindles غَيضاًa dwindling مِنْهُbecause of him الحَيَاthe rain الهَاطِلْpouring down
A sea: when he pours forth alongside the clouds,
A sea, when it rages and the clouds together,
the falling rain dwindles away before him.
Foams a foam from it that the pouring rain makes gush.
كَمhow often راعَterrified يَوماًa day يَراعُهُhis reed pen بَطَلاًa hero
أَيُّwhat a شُجاعٍbrave warrior فِيin كَفِّهِhis palm ذابِلْa slender spear
On many a day his reed pen has terrified a hero!
How many a day does a hero spend in fear
What a brave warrior is the slender spear in his hand!
What courageous man has his power faded?
مِنfrom قَصَبِthe reeds of السَّبْقِvictory حازَهُhe won it فَغَداand so it became
بِكُلِّwith every نُعْمَىboon جُسَيْمُهُits little body ناحِلْthin
He won it from the reeds of victory, and so
Of the staff of excellence he attained, so he became
its little body grew thin with every boon.
By every blessing his lot apportions, fertile.
مِنfrom سَيفِهِhis sword السُّمُّpoison لِلعُدَاةِfor his enemies وَفِيand in
راحَةِthe palm of راجِيهِone who hopes in him راحَةُthe comfort of الآمِلِthe hopeful one
From his sword comes poison for his enemies, and in
From his sword is poison to the enemies, and in
his petitioner's palm lies the hopeful one's comfort.
The ease of one hopeful of him is the hope of the hopeful.
