عِفْتُI spurned المُدامَwine وَلَوand even if ذَابَتْit melted مِنَfrom الذَّهَبِgold
وَقُلِّدَتْand it was adorned بِعُقودِwith necklaces الدُّرِّpearls لاnot الْحَبَبِbubbles
I have spurned wine, even were it molten gold,
I abstain from wine though it flows like gold
and adorned with necklaces of pearls, not bubbles.
And is adorned with strings of pearl, not gravel.
وَلَمْand did not أَقُلْI say لِيَدِto the hand of السَّاقيthe cupbearer وَوَجْنَتِهِand his cheek
جَلَّexalted is المُؤَلِّفُthe one who unites بَينَbetween المَاءِwater وَاللَّهَبِand flame
Nor have I said to the cupbearer's hand and cheek:
I say not to the bearer’s hand and cheeks—
“Exalted is He who unites water and flame!”
“Far be the one who composed of water and flame.”
وَمِلْتُand I turned away عَنfrom لَحْنِthe melody of شادٍa singer عُوِّدَتْwas trained يَدُهُhis hand
قَوْدَleading القُلُوبِhearts بِأَرْسانٍwith reins مِنَof الطَّرَبِrapture
And I turned from the melody of a singer whose hand was trained
And I am tired of the melody of the singer whose hand
to lead hearts with reins of rapture.
Kindles hearts with strains of musical notes.

O gathering of play, I incline not toward you, nor
does the drinking companion draw near to me.
Does the company of the boon companion draw near.

And O watcher of her whom I love, sleep—
in Rajab you are spared what you fear from me.
For you have been spared from me what you fear in Rajab.

A great month, as though God had clothed it
A magnificent month, as though God has clothed
in the virtues of the illustrious man, son of highborn lords:
The creatures of the world in robes of honor.

Of the pure lineage, son of the pure lineage.

When he employs his judgments victoriously, he obviates
He enriches, when he effects opinions as a victor,
the need for slender spears and keen-edged Indian swords.
Without silks or Indian fabrics.

He assailed his enemies in peace, and they did not know
He invaded the enemies in peace, and they knew not
that battalions lay folded within the letters.
That the regiments were folded within books.
