تًنْقُلُهُ عَنِّي رُوَاةُ الجُفُونْ
My tears’ tale of my passion is full of sorrows;
The narrators—the eyelids—transmit it from me.

Though they have been wounded by streaming tears.

My life for a dark-eyed one! Gathered together
In his languid eyelids are the arts of seduction.

To change in our gathering or prove faithless.

The magnet of the mole upon his cheek
Draws, by its beauty, the iron of eyes.

Laid open before people what they inscribe.

I asked him to grant me a kiss;
So he said, ‘This will never be.’

Against the lām of his two temple-locks, with qāf and nūn.

So may God withhold his care from my times! They have indeed
Made light of what in my affairs is no light matter.

Are you not of a people who, when darkness shrouds
The night of hopes, find their way by the star?
