إِذْاwhenever رَأَيْتُI see الهِلالَthe crescent moon وَالغُصُنَاand the bough
ذَكَرْتُI recall قَدّاًa figure وَمَنْظَراًand a countenance حَسَنَاbeautiful
Whenever I see the crescent moon and the bough,
I recall a figure and a lovely countenance.
مُهَفْهَفُslender القَدِّof form ماnever رَناhe gazes وَدَنَاand draws near
إلاَّexcept that رَأَيْتُI see الغَزالَthe gazelle وَالغُصُنَاand the bough
Slender of form, he never gazes and draws near
Without my seeing the gazelle and the bough.
كَالرَّوْضِlike a garden عَرْفاًfragrance وَبَهْجَةًand splendor وَجَنىًand fruit
وَالبَدْرِand the full moon حُسْناًbeauty وَرِفْعَةًand loftiness وَسَنَاand radiance
Like a garden in fragrance, splendor, and fruit,
And like the full moon in beauty, loftiness, and radiance.
جِسْمِيmy body أَلِفْتُI have grown accustomed to السَّقامَsickness فِيهِin it كَماjust as
أَنَّthat جُفونِيmy eyelids لاnot تَعْرِفُknow الوَسَنَاdrowsiness
I have grown used to sickness in my body, just as
My eyelids know no drowsiness.
لِلّهِby God! كَمْhow many لَيْلَةٍa night نَعِمْتُI delighted بِهاin it
ماnot شَابَهاtainted it قَطُّever رِيْبَةٌsuspicion وَخَنَاand lewdness
By God, how many a night I have enjoyed,
Never tainted by suspicion or lewdness,
أَيَّامَin the days كانَwas الحَسُودُthe envious man فِيin سِنَةٍa doze
فَانْتَبَهَتْthen awoke عَيْنُهُhis eye فَفَرَّقْنَاso he parted us
In the days when the envious man was dozing;
Then his eye awoke, and he parted us.
