The morning draught is sweet for us; so take and give.

And drink in delight, O brother of pleasures.

How long this delay, while youth is willing,

time is generous, and the beloved accommodating?

Rise: drink at dawn from the sun of your cup, and at dusk

from stars that have risen out of the cups.

    فَعَجِبْتُ لِلنّيرانِ فِي الجَنَّاتِ

    Yellow and clear, its coolness blazed;

so I marveled at fires amid gardens.

Its bubbles slip from the vessels' pitch,

and pearls are brought forth from darkness.

And it shows you the thread of dawn, twisted, when

it streams from the strainer into the bowls.

the cloth of her maidenhood in the cupbearers' hands?

One full-hipped and slender-waisted hurries with it,

effeminate in manner, nimble in movement.

    coiled like black serpents.

He knows the stations of his cups' bright stars,

between one departing and another arriving.

are the breathings of my mouth, and these are my words.

A king whom, when the battle-dust thickens, you see

cheerful of countenance, clear of features.

Had he lived before today, his forehead would have been

a fitter image than the lamp-niche.

He drags the trains of armies, around which gather

the birds of heaven and predators of the wastelands.

their rations will flow in the accustomed way.

into thickets of interlaced spears, vanishing in forests.

Their faces rose from iron helmets,

so they seemed like moons within halos.

And their bodies have donned rings of iron,

so they seem like surging seas upon hills.

A noble man hurls them down the paths of destruction—

how many perils he has plunged into defending the faith!

and how many prostrations his sword has made among skulls!

Brown, slender shafts, whose thirst is never quenched

except when watered with the blood of hearts.

the smiths' forging is the songstresses' studied art!

is sleek steeds that fly with him to raids.

Black steeds, which morning chose over darkness,

so it dawned, its rising from their foreheads.

Chestnut steeds, reared amid entangled spears:

there must be thorns before the roses.

so they raced like shooting stars, ablaze.

managing the forming of plans and the tying of banners.

tells you, before tomorrow, what is to come.

from a mind purer than a mirror.

and decreed that his riches be scattered.

I mended my heart by breaking his pomegranates.

And from his saliva and his cheek I gained

what was sweeter than his wine and basil.

added by a copyist to make up for his omission.

He tied the kulah-band beneath his myrtle,

where his roses and lilies meet.

as though it were a speckled serpent that took fright and

coiled among the tangled blossoms of his garden.

His garment frightens me in the embrace,

because it is like the night of his estrangement.

His girdle draws its edges tight,

jealously guarding what he bound beneath his money-belt.

O you who blame me if I weep: every grieving lover

is by nature laid bare by his plight.

You are spared what I have been afflicted with,

while my heart is occupied with its sorrows.

He who guided me toward passion

has led me astray from the path of forgetting him.

The languor of his eyelid crept into my body,

and his cheek infected my heart with its fires.

then look at him among his peers.

the dust of his field upon his cheeks.

Shah Arman—may the glory of his rule endure!

A king with time's rein in his hand,

so it changes as his colors change:

white on the day his favors are released,

red on the day he grips his ash-wood spears.

    His enemies proclaim his victory

when the stars of his spearheads shine forth.

The armies of Mosul that were shattered

tell of him and his horsemen.

On the day of Abu Shazza, when sparks were struck

by the horses' hooves from the firesteel of his flames.

They acted like Pharaoh, uniting their schemes,

so the miracles of his serpent swallowed them.

The sea of his army drowned them; thus they are

like Pharaoh's folk beneath his flood.

O inheritor of the earth, yet also its giver,

O king, may the glory of your rule endure!

No creature can tear down your glory, for the

Creator has raised the foundation of its edifice.

Kisra's crown is no match for this king's cap,

nor his palace for this king's court.

    كُلُّ كِتابٍ يُقْرا بِعُنْوانِهْ

    O house of Shadhi, through him you have grown in honor;

every book is read by its title.
