وَقُلِّصَand was shortened الظِّلُّthe shade وَماand not لِيfor me مَقِيلْa noonday resting place
وَقُلِّصَ الظِّلُّ وَما لِي مَقِيلْ
I have stumbled, O Time—is there anyone to lift me up?
I stumbled, O fate, is there anyone to lean on?
And the shade has shrunk, and I have no place for midday rest.
The shade has shrunk, and I have no one to lean on.
وَغَاضَand receded مائِيmy water وَانْطَفَتْand went out جَذْوَتِيmy ember
وَغَاضَ مائِي وَانْطَفَتْ جَذْوَتِي

And my water has receded, and my ember has gone out.
My water has dried up, and my firewood has burnt out,
And my night-road has been blocked, so I have no way.
My journey is blocked, and I have no way forward.

for my enemies have slaked their thirst for vengeance on me.
For my enemies have been cured of rancor against me.

In this life an account book that is long.

And for whom there is lasting shade and protection,

And for whom there is the lofty house which
Time's gaze is driven back, wearied—
The glance of fate is averted from.

so, O vizier of the age, do not be deceived
So O minister of the time, do not be fooled
by the falsehoods of 'he said' and 'it was said.'
By nonsense, hearsay, and stories.

So praise be to God for this and that,
So praise be to God for this and that,
and God suffices us—what an excellent Trustee!
And God is sufficient for us, an excellent Trustee.
