فياso, O قَلبُheart لاnot ميلاءَMaylāʾ فاصبرso be patient لنأيهاbecause of her distance
ولاnor أُمَّUmm (mother of) عمروʿAmr وآخرَand to the end of الدهرِtime لاقياmeeting
So, O heart, you will not meet Maylāʾ—so bear her distance patiently—
O heart, have patience, though love gives no respite,
Nor Umm ʿAmr, to the end of time.
You will see Amr's mother at the end of time.
نعمناwe lived happily زماناًfor a time بالرفاهِin ease فأصبحَتthen became
مَناعِمُناour pleasures حرّاa burning heat علىupon القلبِthe heart باقياlasting
We lived for a time in ease; then
We enjoyed comfort for a while, but it became
Our pleasures became a lasting heat upon the heart.
Like coals in our heart, hot and lingering.
خَليلانِtwo lovers لاnot نرجوwe hope for لقاءa meeting ولاnor يُرَىare seen
خَليلانtwo lovers إلاexcept يَرجُوانthey both hope for التَّلاقياreunion
Two lovers, we have no hope of meeting; yet never are
Two friends who hope not to meet, nor to be seen,
Two lovers seen without hoping for reunion.
Two friends who can but hope for a reunion.
فَلَمso did not تَرَعَينيmy eye saw مِثلَlike مَيلاءَMaylāʾ كاعِباًa maiden with budding breasts
بِحَضرٍin towns ولاnor فيamong مَنthose who يَحُلُّdwell in البَوادِياthe deserts
So my eye has never seen a maiden with budding breasts like Maylāʾ,
None has tended me when love made me languish
In towns, nor among those who dwell in the deserts.
In settled lands or where the nomads roam.
