O Umm Amr, I have not thought of a beloved
Oh Umm Amr, I have never intended any disloyalty
other than you, nor has my heart grown weary of you.
Except to you, nor has my heart inclined to another
ولاnor غَرَّنيdeceived me النأيُdistance المُفَرِّقُthat separates بَينناbetween us

ولاnor كثرةُthe multitude of الواشينthe slanderers إنif كانَhad غَرَّكِdeceived you
Nor has the distance that separates us deceived me,
Neither has distance, that separates us, tempted me
nor the multitude of slanderers, even if that has deceived you.
Nor the many slanderers, if they have tempted you
ولاnor أحدثَbrought about الواشونَthe slanderers فيin ذاتِthe state of بينِناrelations between us

Nor have the slanderers brought about in the bond between us
Nor have the slanderers sowed discord in our affection
anything for you but what displeased the slanderers and pleased you.
Except what displeased the slanderers and pleased you
ولكنand yet وَشَىspread slander واشٍa slanderer لِيُفسِدto ruin بينناrelations between us

عَدُوٌّan enemy مُبينٌmanifest فافترىso he fabricated كَذِباًfalsehood لَكِfor you
Yet a slanderer spread tales to ruin the bond between us—
But a manifest enemy has slandered to separate us
an open enemy, who then fabricated a lie for you.
And fabricated lies about you
وكيفَand how سُلُوُّforgetting النَفسِthe soul عَنكِof you وإنَّهاwhile indeed it
لَوَحشٌsurely desolate فَواءٌempty منof سِواكِother than you حِمىa protected preserve لكِfor you
And how could my soul forget you, when it
How can my soul be diverted from you? It is
is indeed desolate, empty of all but you, a sanctuary for you?
A desolate wilderness except with you, a sanctuary for you
